Is there a cause you\u2019re particularly passionate about? Or an unmet need in your community? Wanting to start a nonprofit is wonderful, but it\u2019s also a big commitment of time and money. If you\u2019re interested in starting a nonprofit, here are some steps to get you started.<\/p>\n

We encourage you to check with the\u00a0Massachusetts Attorney General\u2019s Office of Public Charities or Not-for-Profits\u00a0<\/a>with specific questions, and look through Harbor Compliance\u2019s\u00a0Nonprofit Startup Guide<\/a>. There are also a ton of great experts in our\u00a0Business Directory<\/a>\u00a0and additional information in our\u00a0Resources Page.<\/a><\/p>\n This is the first step we recommend to everyone. \u00a0You\u2019ll want to make sure that what you\u2019re proposing is the right solution for your community. Has it been tried before? If so, how\u2019d it go? Are there other nonprofits already doing similar work? If so, it may be best to join forces rather than duplicating efforts.<\/p>\n You\u2019ll also want to spend some time\u00a0researching business and funding plans, as well as any related real estate or business costs in your area.<\/p>\n Now that you\u2019ve done all the research, start creating those plans mentioned above. Don\u2019t forget to draft your mission statement and determine your organizational structure, plus marketing and fundraising objectives.<\/p>\n You\u2019ll also need to\u00a0identify the incorporators\u00a0<\/a>to build your\u00a0Board of Directors<\/a>.<\/p>\n If your organization isn\u2019t yet recognized as tax exempt, or you\u2019d prefer to operate under an existing nonprofit, you can choose to have your organization\u00a0fiscally sponsored.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n Make sure the name of your new nonprofit isn\u2019t already in use.\u00a0 You can check here.<\/a> Y ou\u2019ll then need to appoint a\u00a0registered agent<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 a legal appointee located in Massachusetts.<\/p>\n You\u2019ll then want to make sure all your paperwork is filed. This includes getting a MA State Tax Identification Number, applying for 501(c) tax exemption, applying for MA Tax Exemption, and registering with the Attorney General and for Charitable Solicitation \/ Fundraising.
